How to throw a potluck!

At least, how to throw a potluck in the style that’s mine! The idea for throwing community potlucks came to us by way of a writer and friend, Nick Tramdak. I suggest those of you interested in the writing of up and coming go-getters check out his twitter. He, along with his roommate Dimitri, were throwing regular potlucks in the Pilsen area. All the invites came with an open invitation for those interested in community pow-wows to invite like-minded folks. The invites they wrote up for the events were fantastic.

Nothing Better

I am sitting in an elegantly appointed club car on an antique train, rocking gently around the Puget Sound at the foot of the Cascade mountains. The sun is setting over the water. It has been 3 years since I’ve been able to afford to leave Chicago to travel, and am presently in the midst of an economy-is-the-mother-of-luxury vacation, in which I am determinedly visiting as many of my west-coast relatives as I can while I can afford to be out here near them. This means I get to see eyes and touch hands with my loves in Washington, Northern and Southern Oregon, the California Bay Area and Los Angeles, and Tucson, Arizona. And the many stops mean that I am taking the train, which in turn means that I get to experience the peace and exhilaration of taking the time it takes to move from one place to another, and to see the distance in between.

Here’s the Story at The Chicago Poetry Brothel

The Chicago Poetry Brothel is a place ripe for stories, an event worth telling stories about. Very much the sort of thing that embodies our ethos by proclaiming: “Here’s the story.” Right here, right now, you are in it. The Chicago Poetry Brothel is about experiencing the story. As soon as you enter you are part of something bigger.

It’s held at Al Teatro 1227 West 18th St. in Pilsen. Just a shot away from Halstead where the Gallery Walk is held.

One is encouraged to dress up in Victorian, vintage, or steampunk garb. Upon arrival you’ll be introduced to the Madam and her Doctor. Either are capable of taking care of you… if being taken care of involves the gentle caress of poetry in a darkened room.

Congratulations Jen Burns! Thanks to Everyone who Came, Told, Ate, Listened!

Last night’s show was absolutely fantastic. We are uncommonly blessed and lucky. Thanks to everyone. Congratulations to Jen Burns who, with her strong telling, closed the show and took the night. I hope you’ll come tell with us next month, Sept. 14th.

Janna and I are beside ourselves in appreciation. There were tons of sweet notes written on the sides of score cards. More people turned points in than ever before, and it was clear from the high scores all around that people were listening, appreciating, and truly sharing in the moment. There were funny stories, hard stories, well crafted stories, and connections made.

Susan Messing is Coming to Here’s the Story: Postcards

Susan Messing – Messing With a Friend

Postcard Front

On the 16th I got the chance to see Messing with a Friend. I brought along with me the lovely Lynda Joy and was fortunate enough to be seated next to three lovely strangers. One from far away, (but Chicago born!) and another, Marissa with a twitter account worth following, (or at least we believe so, come on hit approve! Wohoo, New Friend!) and Brian Elles.
