Quick Journey update to psych you up

Journey is the sort of thing that fills you with memories! In this series we are going to be highlighting some of the cool ones people gave us during the Robot Apocalypse back in Sept.

On the way to checkpoint 5, in the midst of Depaul’s campus, every college-aged person was a potential robot. As I came to a corner, I noticed a guy slowly turning so that his left arm was not visible to me. In an instant, we both sprinted across the intersection into traffic, where a taxi nearly hit both of us. I outran him, but a police patrol car took notice of the odd incident and heated chase. When I slowed to a walk, the patrol car pulled even with me, driving at the pace of my walk. For 3b locks, I had to look unsuspicious as he followed me, while also keeping a look out for robots and be ready to sprint again.

There will be more memories and anecdotes while we prepare for the next three weeks.

Hope to see you on Sunday the 6th and Saturday the 12th!

Journey to the End of the Night Chicago May 12th

As we gear up for Journey to the End of the Night May 12th 2012, over the next three weeks we’ll be reminiscing a bit on Journey’s past, and we’ll come through on a promise to those apocalyptic runners from Sept. 2011 and offer up a proper coda. So expect to see pictures, recaps, and video from old Journey’s here as we get you psyched for May 12th.

Part of why you should be excited, is because we are excited. I am so happy to be a part of cg0 and to help create another great race. The experience has been a resounding blessing. I’ve gotten to meet and work with a slew of new people like the heads of this race, Shama and Ashley, all of whom have been crazy helpful and super hard workers. They’ve wrangled volunteers, made strong decisions, and shook out the map.

And it’s not just two or three people, there are going to be dozens of us working as a team to recreate the city for you.

Among those dozens is Here’s the Story. A fine crew indeed!

Each checkpoint this year will be unique, but Here’s the Story hopes to transport you to a whole new world and by doing so, help you along your Journey to the End of the Night, and through a special twist, nights later to come! Even if you don’t survive the early checkpoints, it may be worth your while to come check us out.

It is going to be pretty grand!

As a member of cg0 I’m looking forward to the event as a whole, but as a member of Here’s the Story, I’m super hoping our checkpoint ends up being one of your favorites!

Oh, what’s that you say? Some of you reading this don’t know what Journey to the End of the night even is? Let me give everyone a little refresher before you we go on.

Here’s the Story Goes to Renegade Craft Fair

As I was making the new T-shirts at Spudnik Press, this pretty girl she asks, “Are you making those for Renegade?”

“No.”

But it struck me that Renegade Craft Fair was a place I should probably go.

Renegades love stories! Crafters are all about tales. So I went out on Saturday and Sunday and slung some postcards. I tried to be judicious about it. I put on my best Derren Brown cold reader face. And besides two doldrumy snarks, I felt like a crack dealer.

CITY WIDE GAME OF TAG!

If you missed the last Journey to the End of the Night, run by our good friends over at CGø, this will be the most fun you’ll have all summer!

Here’s The Story invites the people of Chicago to participate in what will be a race, a game of tag, a scavenger hunt, and an incredibly chase through the city streets at night with your friends! This game rewards both the fit, the stealthy, the cunning and those who are smart enough to work the public transit system. Journey is happening again before it gets to cold to play outside! It is a free street game of cinematic proportions run by awesome volunteers in cities around the world. Make new friends, bring old ones, and find new ways to adventure in our city! It will be super fun, and the more people that play, the merrier! This is a purely community based event!

Click on the poster to RSVP on Facebook:

This time we’ve wrapped the game in story. You are all playing humans in an alternate Chicago. This alternate Chicago has been overrun by robots. Robots set on turning every last human into one of them. You will gather at Harrison Park (18th stop on the Pink Line) and there you will be given a map to freedom. Think of it as an underground railroad. You will have to make it to five safe zones before being allowed to escape the robots for good. Read more of the unfolding story at the disorder of the wild onion.

Basic Rules

You will meet at a crowded Harrison Park. There you will receive a map and two ribbons. One will be red. One will be blue.

The blue one will be placed on your arm. The red one will go in your pocket.

At 7:00pm you will follow the map across the city trying to make it to the secret checkpoints as quickly as you can. All the while you’ll be chased by robots wearing red ribbons.

If you get caught, you will hand over your blue ribbon as a prize to the chaser. You will take the red ribbon out of your pocket and place it around your arm. You are now a robot. The object of the game is to get to checkpoints without getting tagged or to catch as many runners as you can.

Advanced Rules

1. Chasers (Robots) may only catch one person at a time.
2. You must take the blue ribbon before you tag another runner.
3. Checkpoints are safe zones. No one can be tagged in a safe zone.
4. Safe zones will be noted on the map you receive in the beginning.
5. Public transportation is always a safe zone. The only thing that counts as public transit are buses and trains.
6. If there is an argument about who got caught, you settle it like adults in the dark of night between each other remembering the game is meant to be fun.
7. Everyone who makes it to the finish line is a winner and will receive a prize.
8. The runner who reaches the finish line first wins a trophy.
9. The chaser who captures the most runners wins a trophy.

Fill this out, and never miss another Here’s the Story event.

From the Chicago Moth Storyslam to Here’s the Story

I had the great pleasure of hitting Chicago’s Moth Story Slam last night and seeing some fine tellers hit the stage, and I stood in a swelling group of friends, some of whom I’d have never met without the Moth. I also recieved a super cool postcard to send to Elizabeth Harper of Elizabeth’s Crazy Little Thing! But…

Here’s the Story at The Chicago Poetry Brothel

The Chicago Poetry Brothel is a place ripe for stories, an event worth telling stories about. Very much the sort of thing that embodies our ethos by proclaiming: “Here’s the story.” Right here, right now, you are in it. The Chicago Poetry Brothel is about experiencing the story. As soon as you enter you are part of something bigger.

It’s held at Al Teatro 1227 West 18th St. in Pilsen. Just a shot away from Halstead where the Gallery Walk is held.

One is encouraged to dress up in Victorian, vintage, or steampunk garb. Upon arrival you’ll be introduced to the Madam and her Doctor. Either are capable of taking care of you… if being taken care of involves the gentle caress of poetry in a darkened room.

A Here’s the Story Contest Winner!

At the last show we were handing out postcards designed by Amy Kuttab. When I made these postcards I explained to the printer, “We’re hoping people go to shows and mail them back to us with little stories on them. We are an organization that promotes storytelling in all it’s forms.”

He replied, “Are you going to put stamps on them?”

I frowned, “No.” That was unfortunately not in our budget.

He empathized with my budget concerns and then with a breathy chuckle said, “Never going to happen, but good luck.”
