I want to support you because I’ve been supported.
You know, as I sit down to write this on January 2, 2025, my thoughts drift to the years between 2007 and 2012. Back then, initiatives like Kenya’s “Vision 2030” were all the buzz, and the year 2030 felt like a distant dream—a far-off marker of success and progress. Yet, here we are, just five years away. Where did the time go? A looming sense of urgency has me asking myself: Am I where I thought I’d be?
If you’d asked me in 2012 to imagine my life in 2025, it would’ve looked like a highlight reel of firsts: landing my first “big girl” job, buying my first car, saving for my first house, maybe even having my first child. Back then, 2030 seemed like a lifetime to accomplish all those things.
But the reality? I haven’t checked all those boxes.
Unconventional Victories
And yet, when I look back at the past few years, I realize I’ve achieved victories I never could have anticipated. In the past year alone, I’ve learned to regulate my nervous system, deepened my spirituality, and finally kicked my people-pleasing habit to the curb. These wins might not fit the traditional definition of success, but they’ve been profoundly transformative. In the grand scheme of things, I am happy. I’m not always anxious, I am not hyper-independent, and neither am I triggered easily. So, even when I hit the milestones I planned in 2012, because I know I will, I’ll be at a better place to enjoy the success.
One of the biggest contributors to my growth in 2024 was joining Story Luck’s Slacker Mastermind. It’s not just about tightening up your goal setting game—it’s about the accountability and motivation bolstered through sharing your professional struggles, being heard, and having people who show up for you. Emails, body doubling, and providing real in depth feedback. They hold you accountable by celebrating your little wins, and help you navigate the lows by offering ways out.
I’m sharing this now, because it’s a resource, people don’t know about. And I want to share the clarity and momentum I’ve gained with others.
The Slacker Mastermind is unique because it doesn’t just offer quick-fix solutions. It offers space to rant about your professional roadblocks—whether it’s an unruly client, a career change you’re scared to make, or a project that’s been stuck in limbo. You get 15-30 minutes to vent, and then a team of experts brainstorms actionable solutions tailored to you. Afterward, they keep you accountable for a week. But here’s the twist: when you return for your second session, it’s your turn to help someone else.
Helping Others is Integral to Helping Yourself.
Giving advice isn’t just offering support—it’s a powerful mirror. As you guide others, you’ll find yourself gaining insight into your own challenges. There’s something about helping someone else that unlocks a new level of clarity and determination. You’ll leave the second session not only with new solutions but with the courage to take action on them. For me, helping others in the mastermind helped me a great deal in overcoming my imposter syndrome, because here I was, giving my opinion to Dan, Asa, and Claire—people who have accomplished so much, young as I am. So now I know that my input is valuable, regardless of whether I’m the youngest in the room, or the only person of color, or the fact that I don’t directly have experience in that subject.
If you’re feeling stuck or overwhelmed, the Slacker Mastermind is exactly the support system you need. It’s a space where people believe in you even when you don’t fully believe in yourself. It’s where real progress happens—whether that’s in the form of a career breakthrough or simply learning to stop being so hard on yourself.
Imagine it’s December 2025, and you’re to-do list has been crushed. But that’s not what brings you the most satisfaction, because it’s never the thing, it’s always the journey so you’re thinking to yourself, “I didn’t just keep grinding; my found community gave me clarity, momentum, and the courage.”
Till then, here’s to the milestones you’ve reached, the unconventional victories we’ve claimed, and the dreams that are still waiting to unfold.
