When COVID-19 hit, I was in my third of year of college at The Technical University of Kenya, located right in the heart of Nairobi city. My younger brother, Dave, was also in his third year of high school, or third form as we call it, and suddenly, normalcy was on pause. Movement was restrictrd, and schools went on a break. By March 2020, the government had announced a total lockdown, giving us a few days to pack up and head back home. Without hesitation, I left Nairobi, returning to the comfort of our rural home in Nanyuki. My brother joined me from his boarding school in Nyahururu, and with a mix of boredom and ambition, we decided to make the most of this unexpected “break.”
Our plan? Master Spanish.
Fueled by enthusiasm, armed with Duolingo and notebooks, we were determined. We chose Spanish because we thought, everybody is learning French and we wanted to be different so bad. For the first few weeks, our motivation soared. But soon enough—just shy of a 60-day streak—we fizzled out. Yet another abandoned dream.
Sound familiar? If you’ve ever made ambitious New Year’s resolutions only to watch them crumble mid-February, you’re not alone. The problem isn’t dreaming big; it’s often the lack of an accountability system to keep us on track.
But what if 2025 could be the year we break that cycle? What if this time, our goals stick because we’ve found the right support?
My brother blames me for the abandoned dream, but let’s be honest—I caught him watching Narcos with subtitles instead of practicing.
Fast forward to today: I’ve finished college, my brother finally made it to college, I’ve (officially) abandoned Spanish, but I’m starting something new—something I hope won’t end up in the graveyard of good intentions. A book club, and this time, we’re keeping each other motivated.
