I know there are a bunch of things we could of done, and there were people hoping we’d get together and make some random dreams come true. I apologize, I just didn’t have it in me. It’s my hope that my reticency will be met with renewed personal fervor. IE: If you liked the idea, you can do it on your own.
What we did do.
We made fever dreams come true in Columbus Ohio. Demons, Templar, and civilians crashed through the streets of German Village to create a work of large scale collaborative fiction.
This past Saturday was Journey to the End of the Night in Columbus Ohio.
A Month Of… Dreams
Find the Stuff Fiction is Made Of
Journey to the End of the Night for us, is both a work of fiction, and the stuff fiction is made of.
Fiction is the work of the imagination. It’s the work of the unconscious and the conscious conspiring to propose a future.
Getting to storify Journey is a dream come true. It’s the first thing I wanted to do after completing my first race.
When I was a little boy, I loved reading and was particularly fond of Choose Your Own Adventure Novels. Novels that used second person to place you into the action, and allowed you to make meaningful choices that affected the outcome.
As a group of artists, those of us at Story Luck are interested in creating out of the ordinary and unexpected experiences for strangers. That’s our charity work. That’s the community work we do. We’ve found in doing this, we turn strangers into friends. Friends who lead us to new strangers!
Thus we create events worth telling stories about.
Here is one of the stories I overheard from the Devils vs Templar JEN.
This girl, at the first checkpoint, she was given a large plastic sword and told it was an important artifact to be kept away from the demons at all costs.
She raced, hid, sneaked through the course and eventually found herself chased into a corner.
The jig was up. She was about to be tagged. She would become a Demon chaser and use that sword would count against the human total.
But then she mustered up her courage and swung the sword menacingly.
“Stay Back, For I Wield the Sword of Power…”
The chaser stopped and gave her one of these.

She took a deep breath and said, “The sword you fear most!”
And the demon decided to play along. Put up his hands and slowly backed away.
It’s a small story. It’s a tiny thing. But that is the sort of emergent gameplay that we wanted to have happen but couldn’t expect.
All night long, people said, “It’s so cool that you guys put this on.”
Thanks. Super duper thanks.
But also… ultimately it’s you who put it on. There’s no race without racers. There’s no fiction if there aren’t experiences to build off of.
Come to the live show and find out what fictions and dreams our hosts Bonnie and Duo came up with! If you post a story about the task “Find the stuff fiction is made from” in the comments here, you get into the show for free.
