Susan Messing – Messing With a Friend
On the 16th I got the chance to see Messing with a Friend. I brought along with me the lovely Lynda Joy and was fortunate enough to be seated next to three lovely strangers. One from far away, (but Chicago born!) and another, Marissa with a twitter account worth following, (or at least we believe so, come on hit approve! Wohoo, New Friend!) and Brian Elles.

So people ask, “What is this Here’s the Story?” And if you didn’t know me, you’d think having been there as the germination seeds were sown I’d know the answer. That I’d understand, at least, my own vision for it. But I sort of don’t understand, and honestly I sort of don’t want to understand. Because to understand it would likely paint me as an architect, and rather than be an archetect I think what Janna, the others and I want is for us to just be open and present to the storytelling movement here in Chicago. A movement that is organic in nature, in that it’s real, and not caused by astroturffing, slick adds, (of which there are a few,) or big money. It’s coming from elsewhere, it’s coming from more people connecting, it’s coming from people from diverse backgrounds saying, “Hey this is cool, let’s be involved.”

Hello beautiful Here’sthestorians! We are proud and pleased to announce our very first year-end holiday show! Dan and I have put a lot of work into dreaming this up for you, and think it’s going to be a really special night.
This show’s format will be different from usual, as we’ll be featuring 100% Audience Favorite tellers from the course of the year. There will be no walk-up slots; just your favorite Chicago tellers, gracing you with 8-minutes of their storytelling magic. As always, there will be a potluck dinner (we are hoping grand holiday feast style!) and great friends and community. The event is casual as ever, but if you’d like to get a little fancy, or costume it up, please do!

Hello friends! We are proud and pleased to bring you YET another incredible (and yet completely credible) line-up of featured storytellers. There is something very joyful about having the job of going out into the world and recognizing wonderful people who we want to… share with more wonderful people. It is exciting to introduce you to each other, and to watch friendships and creative relationships grow as a result.
This month, we have some beautiful humans joining us to share their thinking, their experiences and their stories. Some of the best people we know, they all also happen to be excellent artists and powerful performers. Here they are, in all their digital informational glory…

This show is one I’m crazy excited about. Both Frank Bergh and AK Nacer are people I’ve been trying to get pinned down for some time. These two guys are voices I don’t get to hear often, and they’re bringing stories that aren’t already in the community. Thanks everyone for doing this!

Hi friends! We’re looking forward to our big show on March 4th, and hope that you are, too. I realized this morning that this marks the very last show of Here’s the Story’s first year of life. Wow. It is amazing to think about all the wonderful people we have met, and all the friends that have been made through this event in one year. It has also been an honor to have been part of fostering the vibrant trend of storytelling in Chicago. We set out to offer the great people who populate Chicago’s many creative communities, a space to get to know and be inspired by one another, and looking back it kinda feels like we have done some of that! I am so happy for all of you who know each other now… I am happy for the time we’ve gotten to spend listening to each other… and I am happy that we have all made something that exists for no other purpose than to share and share alike. If you haven’t had a chance to join us yet, and have been meaning to make it out, please do. I think you’ll be happy to find the warm thing that is growing here.

I am looking out a window full of tree tops and sky, wondering what could be better than having a reason to assemble some of the best people I know every month; to bring them all together in one room, to listen and share and be inspired by eachother’s experiences, thoughts, lives and stories. I’m not sure I know an answer.
With Here’s the Story thriving and growing by leaps and bounds every month, I am happy knowing that this kind of coming together is serving and satisfying the wonderful people who turn up to it from Chicago’s many creative communities. It feels great to offer a place and time for all of you who are doing such good things with your lives to meet other folks who are doing the same, through all different ways and means.

In these ten stories you have a masterclass in the three act structure.
You are taken on ten journeys. Brought into the boxing ring, where you feel the fatigue in your arms as you get pounded again and again in the head. Taken to the kitchen counter where a mother shares a candid conversation with her young son. Later she learns the power of American Fusion Pot Pies! From there, you slink into a classroom full of sweaty children going through the nervous, fart educing, trauma-edy of active shooter drills.
Stories of Covid. Stories of family. Stories of fighting for what’s yours and realizing, “I’m in the boy’s club now.”
