October 7th Here’s the Story Show!

Good people! We have a delicious line-up of storytellers for your hungry ears at our show on October 7th. We choose features for the interesting lives they lead, their skill as performing artists, or the unique and valuable things they have to share. This month, we bring you five people who elegantly embody all these, and we can’t wait for you to meet them. Keep on coming to Here’s the Story, and keep on watching us prove that the funniest, wisest and most fascinating folks are just like you in lots of ways. Across disciplines, specialties, histories and heritages, we all have a lot more in common than we think.

Vernon Mina is a writer, actor, and improviser who is a graduate of Second City’s Improv & Music Conservatory. He is also a Sales and Marketing Specialist at the Chicago Tribune. Born in Honduras and raised in Chicago, he has performed at Second City, Comedy Sportz, Sketchfest, the Pink Line Fesitval, and at the Annoyance Theatre as part of their Triple Feature bill. Vernon has the greatest title ever: Husband and now Father. He is an enthusiast and an approachable skeptic…please stop by after the show to say hello.

Carol Jungman is an intercultural trainer and group dynamics and organization development consultant who has spent the last 20 years specializing in relational leadership and multicultural communication. She is also managing partner of White Lotus Retreat Center and a Training Consultant for Matrix Leadership. Earlier in her career, Carol lived and worked in Finland, Israel and Greece, and traveled extensively throughout Europe. As a performer and lover of theater and stories, she performed in the Body Project Ensemble’s Dance of Generations in 2007 and ran a sister project in 2009, entitled Unsilenced.  These monologue-based performances bring together a diverse group of women to build community, share both past and current stories, explore the body through theatre exercises, journal, and ultimately write monologues and perform them with their own voices.  More recently, she joined Mudlark Theater’s improv group, Second Township, located in Evanston, and has had a scarily fun time rehearsing and performing.. She received her Bachelor’s degree in business and journalism and her Master’s degree in organization development. She is married and has two young children.

Robbie Q. Telfer is a performer and poet who has been featured in dozens of poetry shows throughout North America, including Toronto, Detroit, Oakland, Austin, St. Louis, Honolulu, Boston, and Providence, as well as the Bowery Poetry Club in New York City and the Green Mill in Chicago. His work can be found in several slam poetry anthologies and DVDs through the Wordsmith Pressand elsewhere, and in 2011, he was named Best Local Poet by the Chicago Reader. He is currently the Director of Performances for Young Chicago Authors, and is the head organizer of Louder Than A Bomb, the Chicago city-wide youth slam and the largest team-based youth poetry slam in the world. In 2008, along with Shanny Jean Maney, he co-founded The Encyclopedia Show, a live literary variety show that presents different topics at each show. Since its founding, the show has spread to over a dozen cities in four different countries around the world. His first full-length collection of poetry, My Huge Heart Still Has No Room for You, was self-published in 2006 through lulu.com. His first published collection, Spiking the Sucker Punch, is out from Write Bloody Publishing.

Chris Bower is a playwright and short story writer that is also the curator and host of the Ray’s Tap Reading Series. You can find him at holdmyhorses.com

Cody Cranch is first and foremost a teacher… the kind that chucks out that boring ol’ textbook to make room for creative writing and improv. Storytelling is his newest passion, and he’ll be performing at Story Club on October 4th, and This Much Is True on October 9th. Cody is also a portrait artist and illustrator by night. His visual work can be seen at the occasional gallery, but always on codycranch.com.  He is the audience favorite from last month’s open-mic swap, and we are excited to have him back.
